Health Tip: The Importance of Potassium

Potassium is a mineral that the body uses to help muscle growth, and to maintain proper function of cells and tissues.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), potassium is found in Leafy green vegetables and broccoli, peas, potatoes (including skins) and tomatoes are also good sources. Other potassium-rich foods include citrus fruits, apples, bananas and apricots.

Are you getting enough potassium? Muscle weakness, fatigue, decreased heart rate, and slow reflexes are signs that you may need to increase the potassium in your diet.

Potassium supplements aren't recommended without a doctor's approval, the NLM advises.
