Girls who are overweight at the age of three risk reaching puberty as early as nine years old, a US study suggests.

The research, published in the journal Pediatrics, adds to mounting evidence suggesting childhood obesity is causing the trend of earlier puberty in girls.

Studies suggest girls who reach puberty earlier than the "normal" age of 10 and above also start drinking alcohol and begin having sexual intercourse sooner. UK experts said early puberty could cause girls significant distress.

They are also at increased risk of certain cancers, including breast cancer.

Superman,
It would be very interesting to compare the changing rates of breast cancer in the U.S. and Europe.

On both continents, obesity is increasing, leading to earlier menarche (periods), and probably breast cancer.

In Europe, however, girls are not exposed to the amount of estrogen through food as they are in the U.S. In the U.S. the majority of dairy cattle are given BST to increase milk production, and cattle as well are treated with hormones. We are told that since the levels are limited to 1 percent of a childs natural production of hormones when ingesting this meat that it is ok. I don't think so.

Thanks!
